I had previously bought one of the propane Reddy Heaters (RLP50VA see my review on that) to heat my garage but that heater was completely unsuitable for that task. This one is perfect, it heats up the garage quickly and is quiet and clean. It is a 240v heater and requires a hardwired installation so is a little bit of a pain but I wired everything up and had an electrician friend come check out my work before I turned it on and all was OK. Needed a 30A dual pole circuit breaker and 10/2 wire along with a junction box and flexible connecting cable but it was worth the effort! My garage is a garage under (standard Colonial) 26x22 so the ceiling is insulated but nothing else is. Living in NH, a heated garage for working on the cars is pretty much a necessity and I would recommend this heater highly. 57 of 61 people found the following review helpful. Excellent safe heater with no fumes By Victor H. Agresti Dayton G73 Electric Garage Heater Step 1: I wanted to work comfortably in a 22 x 22 (9 foot ceiling) garage in the winter. Figuring I'd need lots of heat, I bought a portable 40,000 btu propane heater. It exhausts lots of carbon monoxide, so you have to partially open a door or window to the outside to let [cold] fresh air in -- which seriously lowers heater efficiency. The heater warmed the garage, but the approach wasn't satisfactory -- i.e., the fumes were so bad, I stopped using it. It was also very loud, like the hissing of escaping air from a large air boat; plus, when the propane tank ran out, the heater stopped; each time you needed heat, you had to drag it out, connect it to the tank, leave plenty of floor space around this self-contained-blowtorch; put it all away when you were done; and of course find a place to store it. Also, there was no thermostat. All in all, a royal pain in the keister. Step 2: I bought one of these electric heaters. It has only half the btu's of the propane unit, but there is no need to open a window or door for ventilation. It also has a thermostat, so you can set it (to a number, not a temperature), and come back 30 minutes later and be in relative comfort. On days in the low 30s, it will keep the garage in the 60s, which is fine for working.. (My attached garage ceiling and 2 walls are insulated.) My heater is mounted high up on a wall, but it can also be mounted to hang from the ceiling, as long as the clearances laid out in the instructions, are followed. In any case, once mounted, it is out of the way, and always ready. There's nothing to haul out or set up when you need heat -- just turn it on. When done, just turn it off. This heater needs a dedicated 30-amp 220-volt circuit. You wouldn't want to use this every day, due to electricity costs, but for occasional use, it is perfect. My advice is to skip step 1. Note: The model name/number given this product by the manufacturer is "Fahrenheat Ceiling-Mount Automatic 5000 Watt Electric Heater, Model# FUH5-4". It's manufactured by Marley Engineered Products of Bennettsville, South Carolina. It's sold here by Dayton under their name and model number: "G73 Electric Garage Heater". So, this review covers either model heater, since they are effectivly, the same unit. 31 of 31 people found the following review helpful. A great little unit! By Dean Gardner I needed dependable heat for a small (480 sq/ft) woodworking shop. Prior to installing this unit I was using a Monitor kerosene heater which was plagued with mysterious 'shut-downs'. Because of limited space a wood stove was out of the question, so I gave this unit a try; it's more than adequate (I live in Maine) to maintain comfortable working temperatures even on the coldest of days. Got my first electric bill yesterday and it wasn't nearly as expensive to run as I had thought...adding maybe $100 to the total

Great heater, but unfortunately the Dayton brand manufacturers may change from Ben Franklin is the same product in a boiler factory in North Carolina by Marley, who is also a Q-Mark Fahrenheat and brands. This model is also sold as a heater particualar Marley. But Grainger (distributor of the brand of Dayton, who puts his name on Marley) says he wants to start doing "this" model in China, a copy cat. Meanwhile, Marley said they still make it one have put their name on, the United States. See my review of "Marley Portable Convector Baseboard Heater, 120 Volt, Watts 1000/1500, BTU / HR 3413/5120 by Marley" for more details on why I love him.
